HAI Statement on the Passing of Alaska Representative Don Young

Helicopter Association International (HAI) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alaska Representative, Don Young, and joins his family and the people of Alaska in mourning his loss.

“Alaska’s size means air transportation has a significant impact on business and recreation. Consequently, Don’s understanding and support of commercial and general aviation for his state and the industry were nearly immeasurable,” says James Viola, president and CEO of HAI. “As Chair of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, he recognized that the value of aviation in Alaska also applied to flight across our nation. He was a true advocate for helicopters and airplanes, and we will miss his guidance and friendship.”

Young, often called the Dean of the House of Representatives, was the longest-serving member of Congress at the time of his passing, having served as the Representative for the people of Alaska for just under 50 years. In addition to his leadership on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he served on the Subcommittee for Aviation and was a member of the General Aviation Caucus. A tireless advocate for the people he represented, he always met with Alaskans who had traveled to the nation’s capital.

“To his family and the people of Alaska, please accept the sincerest condolences of the helicopter community,” says Viola. “He was the truest supporter of aviation, and we will remember him as a friend and a leader.”
