The Aircraft Electronics Association's Educational Foundation announces the names of 26 individuals who were awarded scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year. The AEA Educational Foundation annually awards scholarships to students pursuing a career in avionics or aircraft maintenance, as well as students from AEA member companies.

Hartzell Propeller purchases the assets of Tanis Aircraft Products, a manufacturer of engine preheat systems for fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, with facilities in Minnesota. The Tanis brand will become part of Hartzell Propeller’s heated products, which now includes systems for propeller de-ice, piston-engine preheat, turbine-engine preheat, helicopter preheat, battery, avionics and cabin preheat.

Safran Helicopter Engines receives FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) type certification for its Arrano 1A engine, installed in the Airbus H160 helicopter. Arrano is a new-generation turboshaft in the 1,100 to 1,300 shp power range. It integrates the best in aero-engine technologies and offers a 15 percent reduction in fuel consumption over other in-service helicopter engines.

StandardAero announces the appointment of Peter Wheatley as vice president/general manager of the company’s Helicopters business unit, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In his new role, Wheatley will be responsible for managing StandardAero’s broad range of support offerings for the helicopter segment, which include OEM-authorized engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO); airframe support; dynamic component repair (DCR); crash-resistant fuel systems; and avionics installations. StandardAero’s Helicopters business unit is the world’s largest independent MRO provider that supports helicopter operators from locations in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

In Memoriam — Dana H. Kerrick

Dana H. Kerrick, 82, of Coppell, TX, slipped the surly bonds of Earth one final time on May 21, 2021. Dana’s contagious smile and warm handshake were well-known in the aviation world as he called on clients and made the rounds at HeliEXPO, ALEA/APSA Expo, and Rotor Safety Challenges for three decades as vice president and co-founder of International Aviation Composites, Ltd. and as a regular instructor for IA renewal seminars.

First Rescue Helicopter Flies on Sustainable Aviation Fuel

A rescue helicopter flies on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for the first time, achieving a new milestone in international aviation. Operated by the German non-profit organization ADAC Luftrettung, the Airbus H145 rescue helicopter had its Arriel 2E engines ceremonially refuelled with biofuel, a type of SAF, at the air-rescue station at Munich's Harlaching Clinic in the presence of the ADAC Foundation's board of directors, as well as the managing directors and top management of ADAC Luftrettung; engine manufacturer, Safran Helicopter Engines; helicopter manufacturer, Airbus Helicopters; and energy company, TotalEnergies. Together, these companies will be a driving force in the decarbonisation of helicopter flight by moving away from fossil fuels.
